i think you should wait or find someone to take care of your pet during the day (someone close)
I would choose a bird because whenever you are not there they will be happy to play with the toys in their cages. but since you are off on the weekends play with your bird so it can form a bond with you.Basically its just a dog with out alot of training and clean up. I clean my birds cage once a week and scrub it down every month. But you have to change their food & water every day. it best to by a second water and food bowl so while you clean the other two your bird has some available water and food. get a cat they dont need you to be there all the time, leave em food water and a clean liter box, pay lots of attention when you get home and they curl up with you at night.
Gerbils and hamsters dont really mind if you're not there for them lots, so long as they have a nice big cage and plenty to do. I wouldnt go for anything more demanding than that to be honest.
I think you should wait as if you are only 16 and in the UK you are up a bit late to be responsible

If you are out of the house for so long please do NOT get a dog. They need waaaaay more attention than you can possibly give to them. Stick with a cat, fish, or hamsters/rats/mice/gerbils.
Above all, please make sure you and your parents are on the same page. Maybe you think you'll just get an apartment but remember things don't always go as planned and many apartments don't allow pets. Make sure you know 100% that your parents will keep the pet if you can't take it with you.
