  • I remember July 4th, 1777, Ben Franklin and I sat on the back of his Ford F-150 and shot bottle rockets out over the Missouri River. We'd had a few, and it seemed like a good idea at the time to fill one of our inflatable water rafts with gasoline and aim a few roman candles at it after we pushed it off the shore. Well, Ben decided he'd be the one to push it off, as he had the stronger kick of the two of us. However, in his state of inebriation, as he kicked off, he lost balance and fell in, grabbing the raft out of instinct. All of this unbeknownst to me, I had already lit the roman candle and was holding the business end arm's length away, pointing toward the raft. As the first spark whizzed out, Ben let out a startled yelp and turned his head away as it bounced off the raft. And I kid you not, once the second spark shot out of the roman candle, both water raft and Ben Franklin went up in a billow of hot orange flame. That is one Independence Day I shan't soon forget.
