Okey dokey, my car is now in the shop and they won't be able to look at it until next week. If it's an expensive fix, I'm not doing it and will be buying my first new car. I've always gone used. But no more. Well, unless there's a real good deal.

Anyway, these are the cars I'm considering:

BMW X3 - Test drove it yesterday and loved it!
    Honda Pilot
    Lexus RX 330
    Lexus RX 350
    Mercury Mountaineer

I'll try and get to test drive the others today. Anyone have any of these or have heard good/bad things about them?

  • So it looks like you want an SUV. ;)

Well, the X3 is supposed to be decent, but gets panned for its looks. Then again that applies to almost any BMW these days (Bangled...). I had to look up the exact quote from British car guru Jeremy Clarkson regarding the X3, but here it is: "And if you are clinically insane, by which I mean you wake up in the morning and think you are an onion, here's your car." :D
That said, it's never as bad as the reviewers say.

Honda is Honda. Reliable as hell and will get you there with moderate excitement. I haven't seen many reviews for it, but then again I've pretty much never read a bad review for a Honda.

Same goes for the RX 330/350 (must be getting the new 3.5L Camry engine for 2007). I never cared a lot for their styling though, but if you like it, no reason against it other than maybe the price.

Can't tell you much about the Mountaineer. I believe its still a rebadged Explorer though.

In that price range, there is also that new Mazda CX-7 and a couple of models from Jeep. Maybe that Land Rover LR3, but the old models suffered from poor reliability (shocking for a British car, I know).

  • For the love of all that is pure and good DO NOT BUY A LEXUS... I should plug the bimmer but I'm biased towards German engineering. No offence Yaj - or I suppose that would only matter if I said German engineers?

  • Well I checked out the Lexus 3-Fiddy today. Rides pretty much the same as the X3. It comes fully loaded with only the nav system as an addon. So essentially fully loaded X3 is about the same as the 350. 350 has a little more horsepower tho. But, I really do dig that massive sunroof on the X3.

I'm still waiting to hear about my car tho. Once I do, than I'll know how to act.

  • Can't beat Mazda. My Protege is getting old, most likely will be switching to Mazda 6 in a year or so.

No offense at all, since I tend to prefer Audi myself.

The X3 is nice if you basically want a higher-profile 3-Series with more space. It's a decent compromise in that sense. Just don't expect to do any off-roading with it. The good thing is that because it hasn't been selling too well, you can probably haggle it down a bit. The Lexus flies off shelves, so to speak, so you won't get as good of a bargain.

  • Sorry to say but the Lexus RX 330/350 is a bit on the fem side of things...IMO it makes the statement "I am a succesful, white, 50 year old, mother of two college kids, on my way to the gym for my morning working out"...wouldn't recommend it for you...:o unless you're into making that type of statement ;)

  • The lexus is very nice. My friend used to have one and even though it was a 99 is was good as new. Leather seats candy coated silver exterior and not to mention a badass sound system with like 2 12's. I'm sure the new one will be miles better. Lexus is a very reliable brand.

  • I tend to prefer Audi myself.
    .

I'd rep you for that if i could..
I Had 2 A4's and loved them.. When the lease is up on my current car I'm definitely picking up an A6... Audi's are the best cars on the road...

  • Actually thats the statement a Hummer makes...

I was in an Acura dealership with my brother in law and we were talking to the salesman about things that are frightening on the road.. The salesman says " What's really frightening is a 5'1" rich lady driving a military assault vehicle"

    I almost pissed myself...

AMEN!!!! THE scariest thing in the world is tiny white women who can't see over the hood of their SUV's
You know, FIFray, you could go green & get the Lexus 400H

  • My Fiancee's car is the X3 and while I find it slightly small and hers is lacking in options due to her fathers inability to purchase things properly I really enjoy driving it.

It drives exactly like a 3 series BMW. It is sporty and tight in the turns and the Panoramic sunroof is awesome. While I don't like it as much as my fathers X5 it is a neat little truck and more fun to drive then my E320.

That's my $.02 for what it's worth. I know my Fiancee loves her car..

  • Go with the BMW. Never known anyone who had that model but we had a 525 and I've known lots of people who've owned them and they are all very happy with them. I loved ours.

  • I drive a Buick.

  • go with x3, its german and classy

  • go with x3, its german and classy

Are you even old enough to drive? ;)

  • If you are looking at mid-sized SUV's, the Mitsubishi Montero Sport is one I think you should consider. My friend owns one, it's packed with standard stuff, nice interior, decent looking appearance, rugged and sporty at the same time, and drives very nicely.

  • My fil has the X3, drove it to Hartford and back to Cape Cod for the Latvia game. Very nice. Except the the $285 speeding ticket I got after the game doing 90 on I-90,

  • Are you even old enough to drive? ;)

yes I have my permit!!! :)

I was this close to getting a two-year old A4 instead of my current Mazda 6, but I didn't want a car with leatherette. It's just vinyl, dammit! :D
