and thought I might take a quick poll of Catholics here on Y!A.

Do you accept that the Earth orbits the Sun and not the other way around, or do you believe geocentrism is an infallible dogma and so must be believed regardless of scientific consensus?

Of course we do and I not only learned that in a Catholic school but taught that in a Catholic school. Further, the Pope has never declared such nonsense as "infallible doctrine." He wouldn't because it has nothing to do with religion. Moreover, no Catholic is saying such a thing on that site. Someone asked a question and the Catholics are telling her that, no, it was never declared dogma, but, rather, it was a common belief back in the day. So, the program she was watching, if it actually said such a thing, is wrong NOT her for asking the question and not those who answered that it is wrong.

I didn't see anyone on the thread saying that geocentrism is infallible dogma but if they believe it they are not only wrong but going against the Church's teachings.

You pretty much have to believe it. Recently, the Catholic Church itself acknowledged it (within the past 25 years I believe) so you have to believe it to be true. It was a flaw in the faith to state otherwise and now, anyone who sees different can't help but be seen as a fool.
Times have changed and clearly people made errors. Humanity isn't perfect, neither is any religion.

Actually, the Catholic church, in the early 1990s, finally admitted that Galileo had been right about that. It took them almost 400 years, but, hey, better late than never, right?

it looked to me like the gal really didn't know one way or the other and had heard someone talking anout the "old days" of just out of context. people can't base historical knowledge against today's scientific advancements.

i think those that truly believe that need to look through the official Church documents and see the error of their ways.

First, you don't have to be Catholic to believe this. If you believe in Einstein's Theory of Relativity, then you believe this (or should - if you understand the theory properly, anyway).

I recognize that a solar-centric view is one originally based on the much-simplified mathematics it permits. Although Newtonian Mechanics seemed to support solar-centrism, now that most physicists accept the (pertinent portion of the) Theory of Relativity as sound, once again we are at a stage where solar-centrism is maintained solely because it simplifies the math involved in solar system mechanics.

Actually, neither theory is provable as the sun isn't in the center of the galaxy and we couldn't even begin to know where the center of the universe is.

And the Bible says nothing about either being the center.

Spiritually speaking the universe is geocentric.
Scientifically speaking, any point of the Universe can be considered static with everything else rotating around it ; who cares ! I mean there are no known reference point ; it's not like the Universe is in a box and all movements are measured from the sides of the box ; on the other hand it makes a lot of sense to use the earth as a reference point ; that's were we live ! If you use the sun as a reference then you choose to disregard the centrality of the Milky Way; if you choose the center of the Milky Way then you disregard the expansion of the Universe and so on ; I mean whatever you choose as the center is going to be arbitrary and since they still have not found extraterrestrial life, as far as I am concerned the earth is still the center of the Universe. And don't tell me they found the actual center of the Universe, they are just guessing around !
