Ma fellow Americans...er, Americans, could one of you lovely chaps explain And1 to me?

I was sent a 5minute compilation of an And1 basketballer called Hot Sauce (is this guy famous?) and I have to admit I laughed at almost every play. It's as entertaining as a good game of futsal, it seems.

Is there anywhere I can go to get full And1 matches?

Do And1 players regularly get to the NBA or is And1 'streetball for those who aren't good enough to play pro' i.e their shooting is poor or whatever?

Is And1 big business or is it a novelty?

Answers much appreciated. It's certainly got me curious and is a nice diversion from the endless transfer banter on the main. Can some of you lovely people indulge me?

Let me tell you a little story. When I was about 14 or 15, I was probably so into the AND1 movement, and practiced that stuff so much. But when it was time to try out for high school basketball, I didnt make the cut. Ever since then, I stopped doing "crossovers" and started practicing on playing defense, and team ball. I made it to the JV team,that year, but went up to varsity the next.

Hot Sauce and The Professor might be the two biggest names.

There is nothing wrong with the professor. He's a good kid, and good player. Just got too commercial after that. The people on the tour started treating in like a reality tv show, (like the real world or lost) instead of a basketball tour. Basketball is my second favourite love after Manchester United.

They wont make it in the NBA because...

1. Some of them dont have the right attitude. If there was a Fergie in the NBA, then there could probably be more.

2. Fpr most of the players in AND1 its a three point shot, a cross over, and a dunk/ally oop/lay up. Basketball in the NBA is a lot more than that. Someone like hotsauce is too far gone to save. These players might win in a one on one game, but when it comes to team game, they'd suck.

3. The guards (Professor, skip to my lou etc) have a good chance of making it, because the guard position is usually the smallest player on the court, so size wouldnt matter. But the big men that like dunking, will never make it. They are either too small, or just lacking of fundementals.

4. Ofcourse discipline is a problem. Some of the younger players are hot heads. fighting their own teammates, etc, and its not even an official match. It could just be a shoot around, or warm up.

I see. So how good are the 'streetball' skills of the most skilful NBA players? I.E if you compared Ronaldinho to Falcao how does it go in the NBA to AND1?

The Hypnotizer-Champion crouches down low with his defender in front of him and dribbles the ball behind his back, switching the ball from hand to hand. He then throws the ball over his defender and pretends to continue dribbling. He then runs past the defender retrives the ball and continues dribbling.
The Flintsone Shuffle-With a defender close to him, Champion dribbles the ball behind their foot and bounces it vertically five to six feet in the air. As the ball is in the air, Champion runs a few paces to the other side of the defender as if he were going to get the ball. The defender follows him, and Champion then returns and retrives the ball

There was a good article about And1 in Sports Illustrated about a year ago...you might be able to find a copy of it online somewhere.

If I'm not mistaken, AND1 sells DVDs of their tours. You can probably find them on the web.

AND1 is to basketball what futsal is to football. These are guys that aren't good enough to play the actual game, but can do some pretty entertaining stuff. I really don't like it all that much though.

In the NBA, you rarely see the top elite players exhibit those type of skills, but you could say...

Infact you couldnt really compare. Lets say Kobe Bryant. He doesnt really have any flashy skills as such. But he is considered the best because he makes a lot of things happen out of nothing. Im sure you heard when he scored 82 points. In that game, about 6 different players tried to mark or guard him. He can jump higher than most other players, and hang in the air longer, so he doesnt have to worry about his shots being blocked. He can run faster, and longer than anyone else. He can shoot and drive with both hands. Then on defense he can shut down his opponent.

No one in and1 can really do that.

The best comparisons are the point guards. Someone like Hot Sauce or the professor compared to Steve Nash. Nash is faster running with the ball, and has excellent court vision, and most of all, can finish in any type of position.

When you watch the and1 on Tv. The players are shown making their shots, but they miss more than you'd expect. The finishing is different. Hot Sauce might be able to get by the person guarding him, but when he's in the lane, surrounded with a lot of players stronger, and taller and sometimes faster than Peter Crouch, then he wouldnt get a shot off.

Well if you play basketball a lot in "Da Area" {D.C and Maryland} you yourself played like these guys once in your life. There is a court called run and shoot in forestville, it was torn down and then rebuilt. We see a lot of the players and former players there.

1. Have you ever heard of Falcao? He was/is the best ever futsal player in world futsal. Recently, tried to play for Sao Paulo, and couldnt hold down a starting spot. Thats pretty much the same story with the best and1 ballers. There is "skip to my lou" or Rafaer Alston, he's been in the NBA for a while, but hasnt really established himself as an elite player, even though he probably has the best ball handling skills in the league.

2. Its both. Some stiff's think its garbage. ******** them, those people probably cant play basketball, or dont like it. The NBA elite players love it themselves and regularly make cameo's in games.

Unfortunately "the man" has turned it into a business. It used to be fun for everyone. But the ticket prices slowly rise. It used to be free. The players used to be best friends and have such a great team spirit, but since their contracts are on the line at times, and money is involved, there is drama. I stopped watching it after the proffesor made it.

He plays for the Rockets now iirc. He is a regular in their rotation, just not a starter yet.

And1 is good for a laugh now and then. The only and1 player i know to play in the NBA was Skip to my Lou (no joke). And iirc he played for milwaukee a couple years ago (idk where he has gone since then) and he was pretty far down on the bench if you know what i mean. the only play i remember him making was getting called for travelling.

You should be able to find and1 online in places mentioned before (youtube) or download them off of filesharing programs as well (ares, limewire, etc.).

Like I said, and1 is good for a laugh, entertaining, but most of the players on it are absolute garbage, and couldn't cut it in the NBA. which is saying a lot, since the NBA is pretty much a dunk contest anyway.

I'm trying to find some matches, proving to be difficult. Does AND1 have any stars, this guy Hot Sauce is he famous or something? I'd like to see the more comedic stuff :D

Yeah AND1 has their "Mixtape Tour", basically street ballers. I don't believe that they make it to the NBA very often since from what I've seen there isn't a whole lot of defense being played, plus their fundamentals might make pro coaches cringe a bit. It's entertaining to watch though, and I think ESPN2 shows the games here often.

No idea where full games might be available, other than the usual torrent sites.

AND1, btw, is a shoe company here that was considered pretty small and generally unknown until they signed Latrell Sprewell to an endorsement deal. He's best known for having his contract terminated for choking his coach. :D

And 1 is the shiznit. I like watching ther mixtape tour from time to time. Then I go outside and practice what I see and end up hurting myself. Great stuff. As soon as I saw the title of this thread and DS' name next to it I almost fell out of my seat. DS gets some street cred for this.
