During the holidays, of course it's impossible to avoid crowds. I do ok with staying away from the stores and such. Most of the time its not much of a problem. Only when I am in the middle and see no way out of the crowd. I feel hemmed in and start to panic.
However it is a problem with my own family. We usually get together at my grandmother's house. About 30 people crammed into a tiny house and an even smaller kitchen. It is the habit to help yourself buffet style on the kitchen bar. Most stay out of the way as mothers get plates for the kids then everyone piles in. I just stay back and wait for the crowd to settle down and then get my plate. Or that would be the plan. Several just stand and pick at this and that. Some do get a plate but stand there eating and talking. Then several start coming back for seconds. This is a kitchen that would not hold 3 comfortably but try 5-7 and I know I can not get into it and push and shove my way through. I tried it a couple of years ago and had a panic attack. I battled my way outside and was trying to get myself under control when an aunt approached and let me know that I hurt THEIR feelings. Seems that they think I am rejecting them somehow. I watched at Thanksgiving as everyone got something to eat and stood there eating and I was having to sit there and continue to wait a hour later while well meaning people kept badgering me to get a plate.
I've tried to speak to a couple of family members and they sound sympathic but when the next holiday comes around, its as if nothing was said.
How do I keep the frustration down when I too want to enjoy the holiday feast (and am being prodded to) but my loved ones ARE the crowd?
You may find talking to a therapist to be of some help. But maybe you could ask one of your relatives to fix you a plate.Or when you mother is fixing plates for the children go and fix yours. And if you have to remind your family when you first get there ...do it...it is your holiday just as much as it is theirs. And they may not recall what you said the year before. Other than bringing a small snack to munch on until you can get to the food is about the only other thing I can think of.
seek help with a general physician who is sympathetic to your conflict - - probably a psychiatrist will seek to have you enter extensive therapy - - stay away from caffeine (esp. sports drinks and espresso) - - take things slowly and just remain thankful in a quiet and slowed-down way
