June 4th Web Site Receives 20,000 Signatures
Published by: admin 2008-12-01
In a global petition campaign for the tenth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, the campaign's Web site June4.org has received 20,000 electronic signatures from 120 countries, according to the organizers.

The petition, led by Wang Dan, student leader of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, calls for the Chinese government to take responsibility for the Beijing massacre.

Including written contributions, the total campaign has received over 100,000 signatures.

The Web site was allegedly able to break through the Chinese information gauntlet as 1,000 mainland Chinese signed the petition over the Internet.

In addition to the Web, the Hong Kong Alliance to Support Patriotic Democratic Movement in China collected over 50,000 signatures on the street and Amnesty International USA has sent in 12,000 more, Wang indicated.

Taiwan provided another 10,000 through an island-wide campaign and an associated Web site, www.6-4.org.

Wang has extended the campaign to October 1, the fiftieth anniversary of the People's Republic of China.

International human rights and labor organizations, Amnesty International, International PEN, Human Rights in China, Human Rights Watch and the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU), endorsed the campaign.
