California-based Micom Communications Corp., which was acquired by the US$12.8-billion Northern Telecom, is to address the Internet and
intranet business in India.
T.G. Ramesh, country manager, Micom Communications, pointed out that
the company launched access routers and ISP switches based on Shiva
technology in India.
The target market for the company's products in India, according to
Ramesh, would be apart from Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd., corporate
intranets, the SOHO market and the ISP industry.
The potential for growth is significant with Indian government removing the barriers to private ISP entries.
The products are to be distributed through Micom's existing channels,
but the company is looking at expanding its partners in the near
future.
Wipro, Microland and Datacraft RPG are currently distributors
for Micom.
The Rapport SOHO router provides integrated IP and IPX communication
services over ISDN at network speeds up to 128 kbps with features such
as large scale remote management which allows network managers to
access network management information.
Intranet technology, which is changing the way corporates work in
India, is to be a keen focus area of Micom Communications.

Micom's Rapport dial-up switch model 8E/8T provides for dial-up switch
support with multi-protocol support to interface between the public
switched telephone network and either the Internet or the corporate
intranet.
On the other hand, the company's DS Model 112 has a remote access
concentrator with multi-protocol support to interface between PSTN and
either the Internet or the enterprise network.
The current market size for such products is reportedly US$4
million.
The company had recently teamed up with ITI Ltd for providing
low bit rate voice (LBRV) technology.
Micom has yet to decide on its plans to set up a contract manufacturing
facility in India for multiplexes.
For now, Micom has a manufacturing facility in the US and
looking at sales in excess of US$3 million, sources within the firm added.
