alcohol is probably as good as anything, but even with good care any piercing can become infected. any reputable piercing place should give you a bottle of disinfectant or recommend one.... and only get the ear lobe pierced. do not get pierced through the cartilage of your upper ear.

Honestly, I have 8 piercings in each ear and I never used that solution they gave me. None got infected from bacteria. Make sure you use real silver or gold in your ear. Some cheap metals can cause an infection if you have sensitive skin. It happened to me and I just poured peroxide on my ears a few times a day and it went away in about a week.
