Tattoo care?
Published by: webmaster 2010-03-17

  • So, Im getting my first tattoo very soon! Im very excited, and Im getting japanese calligraphy starting just beneath my breast, down my ribs and down to my hip.
I just have a few questions
    1) I heard the ribs are one of the most painful parts to get done. How painful is it exactly? Like, tolerable, unbearable etc... I have about medium pain threshhold

    2) Im a tightlacer, which means for at least 15 hours a day i wear a corset tightened to reduce my waist. Yes, it sounds insane but its what i do. Will I have to not wear it for long? How long for? When will it be safe to wear it again without affecting my tattoo?
    3) Just general care for it! I have a fairly bad immune system too. I just need to know the ins and outs of tattoo care.

    Arigato!

  • the ribs are extremely painful as the skin is thin and tight. it would be bearable but not at all pleasant and you may need s few breaks.

you won't be able to wear your corset until its fully healed and the scab is off, probably 2 weeks . also as you're a tight lacer you may need to leave it longer as the skin will be new and shiny, you could mark it or hurt the skin with the bones, tension etc.

it sounds like it will be pretty impressive after its done so don't let anyone put you off!

  • you will not beable to where the corset whilst ur tattoo is healing. any thing that will rub is a big no no - as you wouldnt want an infection of even the tattoo itself to become disfigured.

the pain is bearable. ive had tattoos on my spine and pelvis -yes it hurt but it was more uncomfortable than painful - doesnt help that ur usually tense aswell.

  • Alright here are the basics.

    1. Yes, absolutely the most painful area. My friend has his entire side done, full shading, and he described it as modern day torture. Given that you are only getting caligraphy, I don't think you will have to suffer through the mass amounts of shading he did and will do fine as long as you distract yourself.

    2. I'd say you may have to hold off for about a week with the corsets. You want your tattoo to be able to breathe while it is fresh and moist. Once it starts to scab and peel you should be just fine.

    3. General care is simple. Warm soap and water, gently wash it 2-3 times a day. PAT DRY never rub. Apply tattoo aftercare lotion or a basic unscented lotion. Most tattoo shops offer special lotions, it's worth it to buy one, that way you will have it for the next ones. Whatever you do, do not pick or scratch at your tat, and keep it out of sunlight while its healing to it doesn't fade. Other than that, its common care like any other injury. Have fun!!

  • As a tattoo artist this is what i can tell you...
The ribs are a very sensitive area, it might tickle... and it might hurt like hell... this all depends on you, but it will most definitely be worth it in the end no matter how annoying or agitating the needles felt.

Don't wear the corset while you're healing, allow 3-4 weeks before you consider wearing it again... and I would recommend you ditch the corset all together if you're concerned with the life of your tattoo. Constant friction from the thing rubbing on your tattoo could cause the colors to fade a lot sooner..

As for the general care... your tattoo artist will inform you of everything you'll need to know on how to take care of it properly... every artist uses a different method for what they feel is the best and quickest way of healing...

Best of luck, and i hope i've helped.
