Paternal leukocyte immunization for recurrent miscarriage: location of providers
Published by: mike 2009-01-09
  • I have had Paternal Leukocyte Immunization treatment in London after recurrent early miscarriages. The only known provider of the treatment in the UK, to my knowledge, is Mr. Paul Armstrong, who is currently unable to offer the service. I am seeking other places where the treatment can be done, which are accessible to someone living in the UK (The treatment does not have to be undertaken in the UK, but UK, US, or Europe would be preferable).I would be grateful for any information which might help me to find a place where I might get the treatment again. thanks, Nina Adamyk

  • Hello percygreen-ga I have been doing some research in regard to your question. So far I have only searched in the US but the answers here have been discouraging. One of the fertility and reproduction doctors I contacted sent me this answer: " Paternal white cell immunization is no longer offered in the USA. It currently under review by the FDA. I am not able to make recommendations outside of this country (liability matter). IVIg is a very good alternative. If the person is welcome to call my office for a telephone consultation if she is interested in pursuing this. " I also found some test results from a BlueCross BlueShield Association Technology Evaluation Center (TEC) assessment of 1995. (1) In addition, an updated MEDLINE search was completed through April 10, 2002. TEC concluded that the available evidence was inadequate to determine if this therapy reduces fetal loss. Conflicting results were reported from the seven controlled trials (n=411) of paternal leukocyte therapy that were reviewed. Three of these trials showed significant favorable differences between treatment and control groups, one trial showed a slight favorable difference that was not significant, and 3 trials showed unfavorable, albeit nonsignificant, differences. In addition, an updated MEDLINE search was completed through April 10, 2002. You can see the details at http://www.regence.com/trgmedpol/medicine/med20.html Also on the Aetna web site http://www.aetna.com/cpb/data/CPBA0348.html " Recent meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials of immunotherapy for recurrent miscarriage concluded that IVIG and paternal leukocyte injections provided no significant beneficial effect over placebo in preventing further miscarriages (21). The investigators also found no significant benefit for other immunological treatments that have been used for recurrent miscarriage: third party donor cell immunization and trophoblast membrane infusion. " You might already be aware of all this but I just wanted to make sure of that. If you still want to pursue this search I will be happy to keep searching for a doctor that perform the procedure in Europe. Just let me know Silviares

  • Thanks for your information. I am interested in any places in europe or that are accessible from the UK (the only one I know of is in Israel, which is not ideal, although there may be a possible place in athens. I have heard the conflicting info about success, but can only say it was the only thing that helped last time (not conclusive I know). The other treatment you mentioned we are less keen on, as I believe it is ongoing throughout pregnancy (this isn't) Thanks for your help so far. (If the answer is there are no such places, obviously you must still claim your fee, as you have put work into it!)
