Majorly Freaking Out: Scared For My Family?

Published by: wktd 2009-01-09

  • My mom recently crashed our car. She got stressed and made the mistake of trying to drive home. She's find physically, but I worry about our family. She knows she made a mistake, and has apologized numerous times. My family is worried about the financial cost though. First, there's the car. It's recked and might not be worth fixing. We would have to buy a used one. Second, we have to pay the ticket for the DUI. Third, we'll have to pay a lawyer. And Fourth, we'll have to pay the insurance rise in cost. I'm worried we won't be able to pay it all off, and so is the family. Any words of financial advice?

  • Financial advice? Buy a bicycle. Not only will you have the costs you mentioned, the insurer will deny the claim for the collision portion because your mom was driving drunk. Which means you get nothing for the damages to your vehicle. If there was property damage or bodily injury to another party, the insurer may either deny that portion of the claim, which means the owner of the vehicle and/or your mom is now financially responsible for the other party's damages, or the insurer will pay for the other party's damages and then will go after the owner of the vehicle and/or your mom for repayment.

  • Yep, give up the car. Mom shouldn't be driving, and if there's a drinking issue, she's lucky she didn't kill someone.

For the cost of the insurance/car fixing/tickets/license suspension, you're best off buying bus passes and taking cabs.

  • There's a difference between "stressed" and DUI. Sounds like your mother made a bad mistake. It simply needs to be faced up to and the costs paid.
