How to catch bass

Published by: jack 2009-01-09

Bass fishing is one of the most appreciated form of angling and there are millions of fishermen enjoying this sport. Learning how to catch bass, especially the larger ones, can be a lengthy, but rewarding process. Very rarely can you go bass fishing relying on “beginner’s luck” – good results come in time, when experience tells you exactly what kind of lure to use in specific weather conditions. The bass species are among the most cunning and sporty fish, and catching a bass is almost a bonus during a fishing trip.

The bass fish is predatory and catching it involves a lot of activity and strategy on the angler’s end. Unlike float fishing, catching bass on artificial lures will keep you on your toes for all the duration of the fishing session. Experimenting different lures is essential and it always helps to have a complete and varied tackle box with you. In many cases, even experienced fishermen use a trial and error approach in determining what the fish will bite in a certain day or location.

One of the best approaches to catching bass is to go fishing with someone who knows the area and the fish habits. This will save you hour and hours of frustrating attempts to lure a fish and you will also have less chances of losing lures to snags. If you do not know the lake yourself, ask your guide to take you to the gathering spots, where bass normally activates. Once you are in a region that offered promising results in the past, try to find the actual spots that might hide some nice bass. Trees bending over the water surface provide the smaller fish with infinity of fallen insects. And where there are little fish feeding there will also be a larger bass hunting them.

Other places that might house a bass or two are all sorts of particular spots in the water’s appearance. For example, if fishing for bass on a lake, try to see if there is a stream of water going in or out of the lake. Most lakes have such drainage systems and they are exactly the kind of place where you can expect a lot of fish activity. It also pays to know what kind of fish the bass is feeding on and try to offer them a few wobblers or spinners resembling that particular species. Different forms of scented oils and lures can give you a substantial boost while bass fishing.

It is also vital to have the right tackle when fishing for bass, as this sporty fish will do his best to get rid of the hook. This doesn’t mean that you need marlin fishing gear, but you should have a strong line and a medium strength rod. While casting, try to keep as quiet as possible. Loud movements or flashy clothing colors will scare both the bass and the fish it is hunting for and it might take hours until they get back in your area. This is also true while fishing from a boat – when you find a good spot try to keep it this way. A good maneuver to get the water “boiling” with little fish is to feed them in a particular area. Some bread or some minced sunflower seeds will do the trick and the bass will notice the activity and possibly find your lure among all the little bait fish.

When it comes to catching a bass, skill and experience will always make a difference. The more you go fishing, the more knowledge you will gain, meaning understanding the fishes’ patterns. Remember, fishing is a relaxing past time and should not be taken seriously if you do not end up catching a bass. But when you finally do catch a bass, it is the most rewarding feeling. Fishing is a great pastime to endure during the summer season.
