big list, list view, but with the icons the size of the regular folder view so the album covers can be shown
also, it would be nice if a album lookup is done on a folder that the icon changes like if the info is done on the mp3's in the folder. many people seperate albums by folders and this would make thumbnails easier to do.

that is exactly what the album view displays. you need to use the database features to get this though.

i'd like a merger between list and album view, so that i can see the whole folder name and the cover.
while it's not exactly what you're after, the album view (with sort by artists on) does pretty much this.
another problem with "artist" view, is that there is no support currently for multiple artists. this is due to the fact that id3 has no support for more than 1 artist field. (ogg tags do though).

agreed that the artist view should go artist -> albums -> songs, with perhaps an extra item in the albums section for "all songs" so that the current behaviour is replicated as well for those who want it.
how about this idea...
in album list-view, have a larger album thumbnail art area displayed, in a static area, which shows the album art for the current album highlighted in the list. i am not sure where to put it because i am not in front of my xbmc right now.

you could also do something similar in regular songs view (ie. without database) when viewing as a list. moving up/down in list would update a larger static album thumbnail.
the purpose of all this would be to view albums easier in list view (in thumbnail modes one sometimes cannot see the full name because you have to highlight the album and let it scroll), but still being able to view the larger album art quickly by highlighting an album.
kind of like album list view?? that is pretty much exactly what it does.
one feature i'd like to see is when viewing by artist, instead of when you select the artist it just shows all the songs, i'd like it to show all the albums by that artist, and then when you select an album it shows the songs.
