Is my heart muscle spasming?
Published by: cfz 2009-01-08
  • Ok, so i have panic disorder so i know what my typical signs of a panic attack are, but its nothing like this. Starting last week i kept having on-going muscle spasms in my knee, then they moved to my thigh. Now starting over the weekend (3 days ago) i started having what feels like heart populations or spasms in my chest area. The have been increasingly more every day and seem to be more frequent in the evening. I am not experiencing any pain, just an odd feeling kinda of like when you hiccup. It feels like my heart just thuds suddenly. I have been trying to feel my heart and it seems to either skip a beat when it does it, or have like a double beat. It can happen when i am siting, laying, walking, or standing. I played in a soccer game and they didn't seem to increase with vigorous activity.
I am 18 years old and have been sort of stressed out with school. So anxiety could be to blame. Anyone with similar problems and know any ideas on how to get it to stop...or should i be concerned.
I have really no other symptoms of my usual panic attacks like upset stomach or chest "pain", shaking, and hot-flashes. Just this annoying symptom.

  • I have had the exact same problem, and yes, stress could be causing it.

You should go to the doctor though, to rule out any other possible causes. The doctor might suggest cutting out caffeine from your diet and limiting your intake of salt, to rule out those as possible causes (too much caffeine can cause heart palpitations, and the salt affects blood pressure).

It's likely just your stress, though, so try doing something relaxing in the evenings, and trying some deep-breathing during the day, and see if relieving some of your stress makes the palpitations go away.

If the problems don't go away (or go away and come back) and last for more than a couple weeks, definitely see a doctor, as it could be something more serious (I'm living that currently).

I hope things will turn out ok for you!

  • You are probably feeling what are known as "pre ventricular contractions" or PVCs. It is, for the most part, normal. But I'd go to the doc anyway just for a checkup.

  • I've had these. They are preventricular contractions and it either feels like you skip a beat, have an extra beat, or your heart "hicups". It's normal to have 7 or 8 a day. Some people have them and never feel them while others feel them all the time. I would suggest doing what I did, see a cardiologist and get a holter monitor or an even monitor. These are worn from one day up to 2 weeks or more. They record events of the heart. Mine were normal and I've noticed that anxiety or panic attacks make them worse or more noticeable. I'm sure it's nothing and probably just your anxiety. I was told by my heart doctor that the more you pay attention to your heart beat and it's contractions, the more you notice, the more you worry, which can seem like you are having more of them. Get it checked!! I hope it's nothing serious. Hope this helps.

  • I am no expert on cardiac/respitory systems, but I'm smart enough to know that is is....abnormal.
I'm going to tell you what probably 10 people will tell you ---

    See a doctor.
Perhaps get x-rays or scanned or something.
