"This is a moon view of the world wide Web," said Sam Alfstad, publisher of eMarketer. "The report provides details and analysis of every corner and region on earth, from Austria to Zimbabwe."

According to the study, more than 75 percent of the world's Web sites are in English.

"The growth in new Internet users, particularly in regions like Europe and Asia, has been phenomenal," said Geoffrey Ramsey, who is in charge of statistics at eMarketer.

"Yet the millions of active net users today represent only 2.2 percent of the world's total population, of 5.9 billion," he added.

Looked at from this angle, the Internet cup is still 97.8 percent empty.
