I need, today, a market demographic profile for persons aged 60+
living in each of the Sacramento (CA) SMA counties (Sacramento,
Placer, El Dorado)including as much of the following statistics as
possible: annual income; annual spending/purchasing habits; home
ownership, home rental, assisted living or nursing home, marital
status, employed/retired, and any additional that is available

Thanks for the chance to let me see how finely demographic data can be
cut with Internet resources. As usual, there are some custom
demographic services available for a fee, but the U.S. Census Bureau
provides a large amount of information on-line.
Here's what the 2000 U.S. Census can tell us about the senior citizens
in Sacramento County and the Sacramento PMSA (all three counties).
Sacramento County (numbers, % of population)
60-64 years old: 36,974 (3%)
65-74: 68,167 (5.7%)
75-84: 43,667 (3.6%)
85+: 11,382 (1%)
Sacramento PMSA
60-64 years old: 53,581 (3.4%)
65-74: 92,916 (5.8%)
75-84: 61,309 (3.8%)
85+: 18,047 (1.1%)
----------------------------
TOTALS ABOVE 65, NON-INSTITUTIONALIZED:
Sacramento County: 123,216 -- 41% male, 59% female
Sacramento PMSA: 172,272 -- 41.7% male, 58.3% female
---------------------------
Age 65+, with a disability
Sacramento County: 45,499 (37% of 65+)
Sacramento PMSA: 64,017 (37.2% of 65+)
65+ with Social Security income (average amount)
Sacramento County: 103,221 ($10,819)
Sacramento PMSA: 144,149 ($11,478)
65+ with retirement income (average amount)
Sacramento County: 90,957 ($16,509)
Sacramento PMSA: 121,677 ($17,300)
65+ Below poverty level
Sacramento County: 5,548
Sacramento PMSA: 6,888
Though we don't have a complete profile of those 65-and-older, these
income profiles provide a good snapshot of incomes for more than 87%
of the seniors.
Here's some housing data from the Census as well:
Households 65+, living alone:
Sacramento County: 39,512
Sacramento PMSA: 52,710
Households with 1 or more 65+ (note that this could include elders
living with children or husband-wife both being 65+):
Sacramento County: 93,746
Sacramento PMSA: 128,743
There doesn't appear to be great housing data available by age,
despite a 1996 housing survey of the Sacramento area. That survey was
largely concerned with the state of the housing stock.
But Census data does give us some clues. In Sacramento County, for
example, 27,885 householders moved into their homes in 1969 or earlier
-- more than 30 years ago. This points strongly towards people age
60+. This makes up about 30% of the county's households with people
65+ -- a large and stable percentage. Incidentally, there are another
44,000 people who moved in before 1979. In the highly-mobile U.S.
population, where people move on average every 5 years, this length in
the household would have a large percentage of seniors.
For the PMSA, 34,666 (27%) households move in before 1969 out of the
128,743 above; another 55,790 moved in before 1979.
U.S. Census data are available for Sacramento (city), county and the
Sacramento PMSA (with Sacramento, Placer and El Dorado counties).
Breakdowns of demographic, housing and social data are available at
the U.S. Census Bureau, "American Community Survey Page," with numbers
from the 2000 census:
http://www.census.gov/acs/www/Products/Profiles/Single/2000/C2SS/index.htm
There doesn't seem to be a huge amount of demographic data available
for seniors in the area outside of the direct Census survey. The 2000
Census numbers do include ethnic group breakdowns, if you'd like.
I'll continue to see if I can find additional demographic information
about the area -- but know that you needed this information TODAY, so
I'm posting it now.
In addition, I've done other studies with age breakdowns for the
general population. They might provide some insight into Sac area
seniors.
Best regards,

ability to analyze and extrapolate raw data appears sophisticated;
seems genuinely interested taking on challenges. Response attitude was
