A group of 44 companies including both multinationals and
indigenous Singapore firms has launched CommerceNet Singapore to promote
e-commerce in the Asia Pacific region.
The new entity, part of the
CommerceNet Asia grouping which includes countries in North Asia, aims to
boost activities and companies engaged in e-commerce. The Singapore
consortium has become the latest member of the California-based
CommerceNet
grouping which brings together about 600 e-commerce developers and users
worldwide.

In launching the Singapore entity, chairman Toh See Kiat said the
Singapore
grouping will run several events over the next few months and the revenues
generated from these programs will be plowed back into promoting
e-commerce.

The non-profit grouping has kicked off its first project by launching
catalogues over the Internet and will follow up with an online procurement
system. Comprising 582 participants, the project includes companies in
Singapore, Japan, China, Korea and Taiwan, said Toh.
As part of the
scheme,
an e-commerce training program will be launched in conjunction with
tertiary
institutions in the island. Also planned are courses with Temasek
Polytechnic, the National University of Singapore and Nanyang
Technological
University.
